They now commingle with the coward angels, the company of those who were not rebels nor faithful to their God, but stood apart.

From last week, regarding the abandonment of fiscal conservatism as a fig leaf, Chris Cil lizza:
“ If the party is built solely around a person without any underlying, unwavering principles, then it’s not a party at all. It’s a cult of personality.”

The cowardice of the GOP is far deeper than a moral one.
I wonder what an Eisenhower supporter from 1953 would think of the Bible-humping gun-stroking dog-whistling trickle-downing alternative facts-spewing shitshow known as the modern day Republican party. Having fought fascism, I am sure Ike would say a thing or two as well.
Fun to mention Dante as well, as POTUS seems to represent each ring of hell in Dante’s Inferno.

I think that is well said. One of the points that Sykes makes in the article is that the GOP politicians are staying quiet now, and will sell books later that say, “Yeah, I should’ve said something then.”

I’ve been holding fire and will continue to do, but I will not be neither rebel nor faithful to my god.

In some ways it’s impressive that we’ve managed to elect a president who is the embodiment of the seven deadly sins, and all the more so that he was elected on the strength of religious conservatives.

Cheery thought : what if this isn’t as bad as presidents get in years to come? Now that the gates of rampant hypocrisy and abuse of power have been opened, it may not be possible to close them.
Cheerier thought: what if this is as good as it gets?

Which confirms everything I had always assumed about religious conservatives.
The evangelical set is one of the greatest dangers to what has really made America great over time.

I’ve taken you to be pretty secular, just keep faith and politics as different entities, and everything should be fine.

Reminds me of the GWB days...as worked up as we were then, oh please I’d love me some GWB right now.
Will the future Don Jr. presidency be better or worse than this mess? I can’t possibly imagine anything being worse, but then again...Don Jr.

I actually think GWB would have been a good president if he had better advisors, and sans VP Vader.
At least, a decent president, and right now “decent” seems celebration-worthy.

It’s not religion, but morality I’m talking about.

Startling, really. And people saying that viewing with a lens of race is intellectually lazy, that we have race better in the US than anywhere else, that morality does not matter, that rhetoric is not harmful. I disagree.

I don’t want to think about that. What I’d rather think about is whether the DNC can mount a realistic challenge / option for 2020. Warren Democrat, anyone? With Vice President Pete?

Unfortunately, those play together far often than they should.

A Warren Democrat, are you? VPOTUS Pete?
My chief rub with Mr. Trump is not his politics.

Political cowardice is not exclusive to any party or region of liberal-conservative spectra. Democrats are just as cowardly for not doing something forceful to defend their positions. To me, a ll corners of the national legislature seem overly concerned with maintaining their power and ability to be reelected.

Indeed, the Ds have failed us with their “civility” nonsense, and refusing to play hardball. They are effectively complicit in this mess. This is the failure of a two party system both equally beholden to lobbyists, personal wealth, and other interests.
